With pubs and bars allowed to open to the public (just for a beer) from this Thursday under the rules of COVID 19 Alert Level 2, we thought we’d remind you all of the ones around Hawke’s Bay that welcome us on bikes and who we love to visit while out on a Sunday ride.
THE BLACK DOG
Starting down the line somewhat is the Black Dog. Proprietor Helen, a mad-keen biker herself, took 18 months off to ride around the world (that’s right around the world) on a Yamaha VMAX. The bike takes pride of place in the bar - the scene of many indoor burnouts. The Black Dog hosts several bike events throughout the year with the biggie around New Year.
How to get there: Picking things up from Waipukurau, head south on highway 2, hang a left onto Hatuma Road, right on to Woburn Road, left onto Oruawharo Road, Left onto Charlotte Street and head straight through Takapau and straight onto Takapau-Ormondville Road, Right onto Ormondville Te Uri Road. Through Ormondville this turns into Matamau-Ormondville Road. At Makotuku hang a right over the railway then immediately left and the Black Dog will be in front of you.

Patangata Tavern
The perfect place to relax and enjoy a cold beer. Aaron and Rhonda have done an awesome job breathing new life into this fine establishment. The area outdoors is a great place to chill and share war stories.
How to Get There: This has to be the best thing about Patangata Tavern - it seems all roads lead there so you can’t really get lost. A favourite has to be via Kahuranaki and Elsethorpe Roads, from out the back of Havelock North.

Puketapu Tavern
This is a must include - everyone goes to The Puketapu! It’s unusual to get there and not see another bike. On a sunny day, a pew at one of the picnic tables out the front is a great place to watch the comings and goings of bikes and spin stories. Get Directions here
Bay View
Experience small-town hospitality at the Bay view hotel! Just 8km north of the centre of Napier you’ll find delicious food. We love it here and we know you will too.

Westshore Beach Inn
This one’s a great last stop. Three words - Ribs, Craft Beer. Jeremy and his team do a great job of making everyone feel welcome. Lots of places to sit - inside and out.
